This post is all about Grunske’s by the River.

Bundaberg:

Bundaberg is a coastal city which is located off the Southern Great Barrier Reef. It is famous for its Bundaberg rum as well as the Bundaberg Brewed Drinks company.

Bundaberg is a great stop while travelling from Brisbane to Cairns and there are plenty of things to do in and around the city. From diving in the Southern Barrier Reef to touring the rum distillery, there is something for everyone.

It is also a popular place for backpackers. Surrounding Bundaberg, there are many farms ranging from sugar cane to tomatoes, macadamias to avocados. It is a great choice for those looking to do their farm work as part of their working holiday visa.

Best restaurants in Bundaberg:

Bundaberg has a wide range of choice when it comes to eating out. From cheap, fast and simple meals to more expensive options – Bundaberg can please all tastes. However, the best restaurant by far in Bundaberg has to be GRUNSKE’S BY THE RIVER.

Grunske’s by the River:

Grunske’s by the River (11E Petersen St, Bundaberg Central QLD 4670) is in the East of Bundaberg and is situated overlooking the Burnett River. In the complex, there is both a restaurant and a seafood market making it a very popular choice for locals.

The open-aired restaurant has upstairs and downstairs seating which are all covered by a roof and have views out over the river.

The seafood market is open every day from the morning until evening. However, the restaurant is only open from Wednesday to Sunday every week. They are open every lunch on these days and on a Friday and Saturday they also stay open later in the evening until 8pm. The restaurant can get very busy at times, so if you are wanting to make sure that you get a table or your plans aren’t flexible to wait, I recommend ringing ahead to book a table.

The Service:

When you arrive, there is normally someone stood by the door, and you can see if there is a free table or if you have a reservation they will tell you where to go. They will then give you a menu and you are free to go and find your table.

There is no table service, so when you are ready to order, you can go up to the counter to order your food. If you are stuck on choice, where you order, you can also see some of the fresh seafood, so take a look in there, if you would like some inspiration.

There is also usually a specials board, so make sure you check it out as not to miss out on some different dishes.

The restaurant is also licensed so is able to serve beers and wines too.

Once you have ordered, they will give you a buzzer. This will go off when the food is ready, and you must walk up to the hatch to collect it.

The food at Grunske’s by the River:

What can I say, a girl coming from England where the prawns are smaller than your pinkie finger (and we would think they are big)  – here I am in heaven!! The seafood is super fresh, if I pick a cooked dish, it is always cooked well and I have not once been disappointed by my choice here! The only thing I wish, is that I could try the whole menu!!

The menu

The food is very fresh and are set at reasonable prices. The quality of the food is very high and I would even pay more for what it is!

Some of my top recommendations:

The fresh prawns:

A plate of fresh local prawns and seafood sauce.

The Ocean Trio platter for 1:

This is a cold platter which comes with: prawns, oysters, a Moreton Bay bug and their homemade seafood sauce.

The cuttlefish fries:

I had never tried cuttlefish before, but I was pleasantly surprised. This side dish was amazing! (and cheap)

The Hot and Cold Seafood Platter:

If you are wanting to try a bit of everything and there are 2 of you! (There is a LOT of food), then I recommend this hot and cold platter.

The cold platter is prawns, oysters, Moreton Bay bugs, scallops and crab. The hot platter is crumbed local fish bites, cuttlefish chips, crumbed calamari, crumbed sea scallops and chips.

DELICIOUS!

If you are travelling with people who do not eat fish, do not worry! Grunske’s by the River also sell some meat dishes like chicken schnitzel, steak and pizza – so there should be no excuse!

Overall, I have found that the prices are reasonable, the food is delicious, the presentation is also excellent, a beautiful location and wonderful staff. I cannot recommend this place enough! It is one of my favourite restaurants in Australia!

I hope you eat well, eat fresh, and indulge,

Love,

The Wild Globetrotter
