This post is all about the best cafes in Byron Bay.
Byron Bay:
Byron Bay is a popular seaside town on the coast of New South Wales. It is a couple hours drive from Brisbane, Queensland and offers visitors an array of activities ranging from checking out beautiful beaches, surfing, hiking, shopping and sampling local produce.

Location:
Many of the cafes in Byron Bay are located in the town centre. However, there are also some great spots that you would not want to miss out on, a little outside the town centre. They are still within walking distance, however, it will take you a little longer, but one thing is for sure – you won’t be disappointed!
The Best Cafes In Byron Bay:
Below are my top recommendations for the best cafes in Byron Bay. One thing to note is that most of these cafes are for early-risers and most things close by 2pm. However, if you are looking for a breakfast, brunch or lunch – I have got you covered!
Sparrow Coffee:
Sparrow Coffee is a small coffee shop in the main centre of Byron Bay on Byron Street, and it offers delicious coffees. This coffee spot seems to be popular with the locals, which shows how good the coffee must be. It may only be small, with not a lot of seating, but the standard of coffee is quite high. You can drink in or takeaway. It is perfect for early risers as it opens from 6am until 2pm and also offers a selection of pastries. If you are a coffee lover, make sure to check out Sparrows Coffee on your next visit to Byron Bay or the surrounding area (they are also in Bangalow).
Bayleaf Cafe:
As I have previously mentioned in my post about relaxing things to do in Byron Bay (LINK), the Bayleaf Cafe is a must visit. With a great vibe, wonderful staff and always busy, there is no doubt that the Bayleaf Cafe will not disappoint and is considered one of the cool cafes in Byron Bay.
Like many of the other cafes mentioned in this post, the Bayleaf Cafe opens early at 7am and closes at 2pm. It is a great hangout spot to meet friends, get some energy to explore the town or the perfect place to reenergise after an early morning surf! There is seating both inside and out and it is also possible to work from the cafe as they offer WIFI.
The Bayleaf Cafe serves breakfast, brunches and lunch and all the food is presented beautifully. Personally, I can recommend the Bayleaf Greens, a salad with poached eggs. However, I saw some people with the poached eggs and avo on toast and that looked spectacular.
The coffee was also delicious and was presented beautifully.
I personally believe that the Bayleaf Cafe is a contender for one of the best cafes in Byron Bay.
The Sunday Sustainable Bakery:
If you like bakeries, then you CANNOT MISS this one! The Sunday Sustainable Bakery is on Jonson Street and offers a chance for visitors to come and eat all day (6am- 5pm). It is perfect for an afternoon pick me up and sweet treat.
I was recommended the cheesecake by a local, and honestly – IT WAS DELICIOUS. I have to say, that indeed it was not to be missed!
I would also recommend the vanilla slice. It was huge, creamy and the perfect thing to have in order to relax while reading a book after a day spent exploring the town’s street art.

The Byron Bay General Store:
Next up we have the Byron Bay General Store. This café is located a little out at the bottom of town along Bangalow Road. It will not take you too long to walk to from the centre and is well worth the walk.
The opening hours of The General Store in Byron Bay are only in the morning times (7am-2pm), however, you can grab a delicious breakfast, brunch or lunch from here. The cafe serves organic and environmentally friendly dishes suitable also for vegans and gluten-free customers. Their menu includes smoothie bowls, waffles, breakfasts and burgers.
It is truly one of the cool cafes in Byron Bay! There are both seating indoors and out and it is a very relaxed atmosphere. I took my laptop and was able to do some work while sitting there and it was a very pleasant environment. Personally, the coffee was one of the top coffees which I had had in Byron Bay, and the banana bread was also delicious which I ate for breakfast. Looking at other people’s orders, I wish I had had more time in Byron Bay to go back to try other things!
Byron Fresh:
Byron Fresh is a casual cafe which offers both morning and evening meals. Whether you are looking for a breakfast, brunch or wanting an evening meal, Byron Fresh is a good choice. They have a big menu with healthy, organic and local produce.
This cafe is always bustling with people and is a stone throw from the beach making it also a great location if you are spending the day on the beach. As it is always busy, at peak times you may have to wait for a table, but there are many tables, so the wait is usually not too long.
I took a brunch in Byron Fresh, and I really enjoyed it. All the ingredients were fresh, a high quality and well sourced.
And now for my favourite!!!
The Top Shop:
If you are visiting Byron Bay, you HAVE TO make sure you take a walk to The Top Shop. The Top Shop has to be THE BEST CAFE EVER for cinnamon swirls! OMG, these cinnamon swirls were literally to die for!
The Top Shop is located a short walk from town on the corner of Carlyle Street and Massinger Street and is open from 6:30am until 3pm. It is the perfect place to grab breakfast or lunch (or both). It is busy most times, but there are places to sit both inside or outside as well as takeaway.
All of their food looks delicious and they also have a chalk board with specials on it.
I can personally recommend the cinnamon swirls (of course), the breakfast roll as well as their coffees!
Side Note: If you are going to walk up to The Top Shop, you could combine it with a walk through Arakwal National Park and Tallow’s Beach to either work up an appetite or walk off your delicious treats back towards town.
This would definitely be one of my top recommendations for best cafes in Byron Bay.
BONUS: Market food
Even though this is not actually a cafe, I thought I would add this extra on the end. Byron Bay and the surrounding area is home to many markets, all of which are very popular and good. Typically a lot of these markets offer handicrafts, local produce and delicious street food.
While at the Byron Bay Twilight Market which starts from 4pm onwards in the Railway Park in Byron Bay, I chose a delicious hot lamb roll from here and it was delicious! The lamb was tender and juicy and they gave you a huge portion! I would highly recommend checking out any of the markets if you are in and around Byron Bay.
So there we have it, some of the best cafes in Byron Bay. I hope I have made your mouth water, and that you have collected a cafe list of places you would like to visit on your next trip to Byron Bay!
Enjoy, eat well and relax!
Love
