Information about Minyon Falls:
Minyon Falls is a 100-metre plunge waterfall in the Nightcap National Park which is part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area. It is set in a deep gorge which is completely forested. At the base of the waterfall there is a pool where it is possible for hikers to go swimming. From the pool, you can look up at the 100 metre jagged rhyolite cliffs which were once a section of the Tweed Volcano. The valley also has a creek that runs through it.
The rainforest is made up of different Australian Eucalypts like scribbly gum and blackbutt, ferns and Cycads.
The falls are not just a beautiful place to visit, they are also a sacred place for the Bundjalung people and especially the Widjabul People who are the traditional owners of the land.

Here is the exact tour I went on:
A day spent with Byron Bay Adventure Tours:
Byron Bay Adventure Tours pick up from the Byron Bay visitor centre on Jonson Street and we were told to meet at 7:50am. Our tour leader, Tom, greeted us and once all 5 of us were at the meeting place, we jumped into his 4X4, ready for our Minyon Falls adventure!
After about 45 minutes of driving, we arrived at the Minyon Grass Trail car park. The car park is a fair size and has toilet and picnic facilities in it. The Minyon Grass Trail viewing platform is also next to the car park and this viewing platform gives you an incredible view over the forest canopy and onto the impressive Minyon Falls.
The Minyon Falls Walk:
The Minyon Falls walk is a grade 4, 3.5km, 2-3 hour return walk from the car park. The way down to the waterfall is mainly downhill, and the way back will be mostly uphill. There is a track the whole way, however, towards the end it gets a little tougher. Once you get down to the bottom of the valley and meet the creek, you have to walk along the creek up to the waterfall and this section is very rocky and involves a little bit of bouldering and clambering over the rocks. If you are a little unsteady on your feet, this section may prove very challenging for you. Please note, without completing this section, you will not be able to see the waterfall.
During our walk, Tom pointed out various interesting elements including the scribbly gum, the strangler fig trees and different wildlife. Tom knew the area very well and gave us so many interesting facts about Nightcap National Park and Minyon Falls in general.
After clambering over the rocks by the creek, we were finally rewarded with the breathtaking Minyon Falls. What an incredible place. Tucked away in the middle of the forest, with such a sheer drop, the water spray felt so refreshing after our hike.
We had some time to swim, rest and recharge before we made our way back up to the car park. The water was very cool but refreshing after the hike down.
The way back:
After having some free time, we all got ready to set off and start our hike back to the car park. It was a little harder on the way back due to it being mostly uphill but it was nice to see the landscape from a different perspective.
Minyon Falls Viewpoint:
After hiking back to the car park, Tom took us to the other car park (which is where Minyon Falls Lookout is on Google Maps). From here, we could go on the Minyon Platform Track to the lookout (hardly any walking involved) to stand just above the drop of Minyon Falls. You can see the creek, the jawdropping drop and the pool right at the bottom. The view of the whole valley is remarkable.
I highly recommend coming here after completing the Minyon Falls walk, as you can get another perspective of where you had just hiked.
⚠️ If you are scared of heights, this platform may not be for you.
Bangalow and Lunch:
After checking out this viewpoint, it was then time for us to get back into the 4×4 for our next stop on our Byron Bay Adventure tour to Minyon Falls – Bangalow and lunch!
The journey from Minyon Falls to Bangalow took around 40 minutes and when we got there, we had some time to look around the small hinterland town while Tom prepared a barbecue in the park for us.
The Town of Bangalow:
Bangalow is a small town in the hinterland, around 14km from Byron Bay. If you go by car, the journey will take around 16 minutes. However, if you do not have your own vehicle there is also a bus service from Byron Bay. See this link for more information.
The town has some boutiques and coffee shops. I highly recommend stopping in at Pantry 29. They do fantastic milkshakes.
Lunch: Barbecue in the park:
After exploring the town for a little while, Tom had told us to meet back at the park where he was preparing lunch. He had prepared a delicious barbecue for us with burgers, salad, crisps and beverages; it was delicious!
Back to Byron Bay:
After that, it was time to head back to Byron Bay. Tom dropped us off at the Byron Bay visitor centre at around 2pm. It was a fantastic day, and it was well worth doing the tour.
Would I recommend visiting Minyon Falls and doing the Minyon Falls walk?
For sure! If you are visiting Byron Bay, you should definitely explore the hinterland and the Nightcap National Park. It is very close to Byron Bay, but it is a different world; less people, surrounded by nature, rolling hills and full of wildlife.
The Minyon Falls walk is also unmissable! It may only be a short walk but is very rewarding when you climb over the boulders and catch your first glimpse of this amazing waterfall. If you are lucky, you may also have the waterfall to yourself as when we went, it wasn’t busy at all and there were only a couple at the beginning who were there.
Tom also told us that there is a longer Minyon Fall walk which starts from the second car park. (The car park connected to the Minyon platform track). This walk is much longer, however, at this moment in time (March 2023 the path is closed due to flood damage. The current notice suggests that the path will reopen in June 2023). If you would like more information about whether this longer walk is open, check this link for the most up to date information.
Would I recommend Byron Bay Adventure Tours?
100% yes! I thought this was a great tour, and it was well worth the money. The tour size was small, Tom was very interesting and informative giving us lots of information on Minyon Falls, the Nightcap National Park and Byron Bay itself and Tom’s cooking skills were impressive.
However, if you had your own transport and would prefer to go alone, Minyon Falls and the Minyon Falls walk will not disappoint you, you will have a great day.
Regardless of how you get there, Minyon Falls and the Minyon Falls walk should be on every person’s Byron Bay bucketlist.
Remember: happy hiking, safe travels and most importantly enjoy the adventure.
Love,
