General Information about Byron Bay:

Byron Bay is a coastal town in New South Wales, Australia. It is around 164km from Brisbane and roughly 759km away from Sydney.

Byron Bay is famous for its laid back lifestyle, great surf, beautiful beaches and its local markets. People come to Byron Bay for many reasons: surfing, partying, hiking, exploring the hinterland and much more. Byron Bay is the perfect place for anyone to go to relax and unwind. There are plenty of chilled spots, good food, beautiful nature, and breathtaking beaches – making it the perfect place to relax. Below are my top recommendations for relaxing things to do in Byron Bay.

Top Relaxing Things To Do in Byron Bay:

Take a meditation class

What better way to start the day, then to go to some meditation classes in Byron Bay. Take a moment of calm, forget the outside world and go within. I highly recommend the meditation classes in Byron Bay at State of Salt Studio . They offer a free community mediation class on a Sunday morning aswell. Be sure to take a look at their website and book before going.

State of Salt is a beautifully designed studio at the bottom of town. It has a wonderful piece of street art on the side of the studio.  While I was there, Hannah was the meditation teacher, and she made everyone feel so welcome and calm. She also offered you a fresh herbal tea before and after the meditation practice. I felt like I came out of these meditation classes in Byron Bay a lot calmer, grounded and refreshed.

Take a trip to Crystal Castle

This activity is not actually in Byron Bay, but about a 20-minute drive away in the hinterland. Crystal Castle is an oasis, home to some of the tallest geodes in the world and is a super zen place to visit. Crystal Castle is a big garden complex with many different areas where you can relax, unwind, connect on a spiritual level, or just be in peace.

The Peace Dome at Crystal Castle

Crystal Castle also has a Peace Dome where at certain times of the day, they hold guided crystal meditation classes and crystal singing bowl meditations. Be sure to check the website for specific times so that you plan your day accordingly. Apart from that, I would recommend strolling the gardens, sitting or meditating in the garden and trying out their reflexology walk.

If you are planning on spending the whole day at Crystal Castle, there is also a lovely café within the gardens which serves light meals with an excellent view out over the hinterland.

Massages in Byron Bay

What better way to unwind, than to find a good masseuse in Byron Bay. I can’t think of anything better if you are on holiday than surrendering and allowing someone to work your tension and knots, which can allow you to leave feeling like a different person. As Google will tell you, there are an abundance of spas and massage parlours in Byron Bay.

I can personally recommend Kelly at Merak Massage Rituals who I found through Google Maps. Her small massage studio is located towards the bottom of town. It is very close to the Byron Bay General Store (where if you have time, I would highly recommend visiting for delicious breakfasts and coffee).

As a massage lover, I have had many massages all over the world. I have come to realise that when you travel, it can be really hit and miss with the quality of the massage. However, Kelly really knows what she is doing. I was greeted with a cool herbal drink, and she sat me down to chat about if there were any particular areas that I would like to focus on, the pressure and anything else that she should know. She then allowed me to get ready for the massage.

The massage was perfect, just like I had asked for. Her pressure was great and she used her intuition to work out tight knots if and when she found them. After visiting Kelly at Merak Massage Rituals, I felt less tight, chilled out and destressed.

It definitely is one of the most perfect relaxing things to do in Byron Bay.

Note: Please check her website for availability. She will be travelling for a little while soon, but if she is available and in Byron Bay, I would contact her straight away!

Yoga in Byron Bay

You will be spoilt for choice when searching for yoga in Byron Bay, and this is a wonderful way to zen out. There are yoga studios all over Byron Bay which offer a range of different yoga styles and times. It is also possible to do yoga on the beach. For more information about this, please click on this link. Personally, I can recommend the State of Salt studio. I loved this studio (as mentioned before in the meditation section) and I would highly recommend checking out their timetable. The teachers are very friendly, it is in a beautiful space, a calming atmosphere – setting you up for a wonderful yoga session.

Cafes in Byron Bay:

Well, I don’t know about you, but I know that when I want to relax, food and café culture plays a huge part in me succeeding. Other top relaxing things to do in Byron Bay include visiting one of the many cafes in Byron Bay. You will not be short of choice, the standard of food and service in most of these cafes is very high and you will be happy wherever you choose.

Here are two of my favourite options when it comes to relaxing in Byron Bay.

  1. The Sunday Sustainable bakery

If you are wanting an afternoon pick me up, then the Sunday Sustainable bakery is the place to go. They have a wide range of baked goods, but nothing can beat their cheesecakes! I highly recommend a fruit cheesecake and a coffee from here. It will make your day, turn into a fantastic one.

(P.S this café is very close to State of Salt – so why not grab your favourite book and head here after your yoga or meditation class to continue your chilled day.)

2. The Bayleaf Cafe

The Bayleaf café is one of my top cafes for relaxing things to do in Byron Bay. It is nearly always busy, but even with a lot of people, it has a very laid-back feeling to it. The interior of the café is its own vibe, the staff are very friendly and helpful, and the food is healthy and delicious. I took the Bayleaf Greens, a juice and a coffee and it was super tasty. The coffee was also great! They also have WIFI, so if you wanted to relax with the net, it would also be possible from here.

Beaches

If you are wanting to find relaxing things to do in Byron Bay, then what better way to spend the day then going to a beautiful beach. What is even better, is that in Byron Bay there are so many beaches, you are spoilt for choice. Some may take more time to get to, but may result in you skipping the crowds and having the beach almost to yourself.

Some of the most beautiful and quiet beaches I recommend are:

  1. Little Wategoes Beach:
Wategoes Beach
Wategoes Beach, Byron Bay

This beach will take a little walk to get here along the coastal path, but it is such a beautiful beach. Tucked into the tip and close to the Cape Byron Lookout, this beach does not have so many crowds and can allow you to get a bit of R&R. You may even be lucky to see a pod of dolphins swimming by. (I saw these from the lookout).

2. Tallow’s Beach:

Tallow’s Beach is also another beach if you are wanting peace and quiet and to escape the crowds. It is an extremely long beach stretching around 6.5km so there is plenty of space for you to relax.

It also backs onto a couple of reserves (such as the Byron Bay Recreation Reserve) and some National Parks such as Arakwal National Park. Making it the perfect way to escape.

There is a car park off Tallow Beach Road which will take you down to the “Cosy Corner” area of Tallow’s beach. Further south, there are small walkways through the reserves or National Parks. You can check Google Maps for further information.

Walks

If you feel like you are searching for active relaxing things to do in Byron Bay, then going for a walk would be ideal! That way you can be surrounded by nature, escape the crowds (depending on where you choose) and can get your body moving.

Here are two particular walks I would recommend:

The Cape Byron walking track:

The Cape Byron walking track officially leaves from The Pass and finishes at the Cape Byron Lighthouse. However, it is possible to walk the entire thing from the town (but it is a lot longer). It offers spectacular views of the coast and if you are lucky, also gives you an opportunity to spot some wildlife. During my walk, I was able to spot several pods of dolphins as well as a koala (by The Pass car park).

Walk Byron Bay
Byron Bay Lighthouse

The official walking track is only 3.7km long. However, you must time the walk correctly, as otherwise, you could be hit with crowds of people (especially if you go at sunset). Earlier in the morning is probably the best time to go. This is because although at midday there are not many crowds, you must battle with the midday sun. At times, there is not much shade available.

However, I recommend this track as a relaxing activity to do in Byron Bay as you can take your time, pack a lunch and beach hop around the bay.

Minyon Falls:

If you wanted to get out and explore the hinterland, I recommend escaping to the Nightcap National Park. Here, you can surround yourself in nature, ground yourself and recharge. A perfect walk for active relaxing things to do in Byron Bay, would be to visit Minyon Falls and to complete the Minyon Falls walk. This walk is fairly short in distance, 3.5km, and don’t forget to pack your swimmers as once you arrive at the waterfall, you can also cool off in the pool underneath.
